Metallica
is an extremely successful American heavy metal
band that has been together since October 1981.
The band has sold over 200 million albums
worldwide, making them the most commercially
successful heavy metal act in history.
After
building a following through its role in the
development of heavy metal in the 1980s, the
band broadened its audience in the early 1990s.
Accordingly, the band stood as the most
commercially visible example of the metal genre
for most of that decade. In contrast,
Metallica's vastly increased commercial success
was accompanied by stylistic changes that
fostered accusations of "selling out"
by some long-time fans. Although their recent
albums have sold well, these fans feel that
Metallica abandoned their pure thrash-metal
roots. Some fans also feel that Metallica's
1999-2001 stand against Internet file sharing
deeply damaged their reputation.
In
2003 Metallica released their 8th studio album,
entitled St. Anger, a collection of the most
aggressive music they had written in a decade,
to deeply divided critical reviews and
comparatively mediocre sales figures.
There
is great speculation that Metallica will release
their 9th studio album sometime in 2006
Metallica
is listed at #5 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of
Hard Rock. Read
